Neve ParitzkiThe first cycle tunnel in Israel opens in Jerusalem

The Kerem Tunnel allows for a an experience that is unique in terms of hiking and riding.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest bicycle tunnel, has been inaugurated as part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which circles the capital.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entry is located in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was inaugurated by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister ZeevElkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company Chairman, as well as many cyclists.

נווה פריצקי Jerusalem was a desirable tourist destination due to its rich past. Elkin stated that, today aside from its historic treasures, it also incorporates modern tourists. "The inauguration [of] this tunnel project is yet another step in the development of Jerusalem as an attractive tourist destination for all types of travelers throughout Israel as well as around the world."

נווה פריצקי Elkin's ministry, which responsible for the project along in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, stated that his ministry "invests hundreds and millions of shekels annually in all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism, and also in the creation of new ventures and attractions that link the amazing historical time of our capital city and its future." I encourage all cyclists to come and take a ride along the modern, well-maintained route that overlooks Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project.  נווה פריצקי The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.


Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the goal of shifting the idea of transportation in Jerusalem. Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. The tunnel will also be paved in its different areas. It will also help cyclists and promote green transportation in the capital.

נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the 1990s to move the main sewer line from the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek The Sorek Tunnel is located west of the city and is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel. It also houses the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

The current work includes road construction, installation blowers, and sophisticated security systems to ensure the tunnel is secure for all to use during the entire year.
