Neve ParitzkiJerusalem's first cycle tunnel has been inaugurated in Israel

The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is opened as part the 42-kilometer cycle route which runs through the capital.

The tunnel is a link between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It is located in southern Israel within Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the closest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

Elkin's Ministry Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project. The project was executed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the goal of changing the concept for transportation throughout Jerusalem. "The tunnel, which connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths in the city as well as those that are being constructed in its diverse neighborhood. The tunnel is intended to encourage cycling within the city's residents and to promote the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move an important sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water that runs to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Road construction, installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are some of the ongoing works to ensure the tunnel is safe for all seasons.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the Biblical aquarium and zoo as also the historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
